Lately, anything coming from Pixar is synonym of good entertainment. Though the story of Bolt may seem simple and unoriginal, the personality of Bolt and the little gang he assembles throughout his adventure is not only appealing, but asserted. As usual with Disney, there’s a message in the story, and this one is that friendship is stronger than any hardship, distance or even species. This movie will provide good entertainment for both children and grownups (but it won’t beat Wall-e).
It might have been the fact that Australia was sold as a romantic adventure that perhaps disappointed audiences somewhat, because ultimately the movie is much more than that. It is a lesson not only on history of a continent that has seen some horrific and cruel things in its history, but on what it means to truly love. The movie can be divided into two parts, the first one filled with thrill that will keep you at the edge of your seat, and the second one which deals more with the development of the characters as they are faced with adversity, all to conclude with a bittersweet taste. The movie is good, with the outstanding direction of Baz Luhrmann and the excellent performances of Kidman and Jackman (and newcomer Walters). But don’t get me wrong, the movie has its flaws – clichés and scenes that were unnecessary or misplaced, but all in all it provides high-quality entertainment.
