Join us as Bea Hanson, the newly appointed acting director of the Office on Violence Against Women in the Department of Justice, briefs us on the federal government’s initiatives on domestic violence and sexual assault.

Sustaining financial commitments to prevent and respond to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking, even during tough economic times;
Expanding support for sexual assault victims by increasing victim support services and enhancing the criminal justice system’s response to sexual assault, including the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators;
Educating communities about the realities of rape and its impact on victims, families, and society;
Reducing domestic violence-related homicide; and
Ensuring that underserved populations are provided with culturally-appropriate services.
Bea Hanson is the acting director of the Office on Violence Against Women in the Department of Justice . She serves as the liaison between the Department of Justice and federal, state tribal and international governments on matters relating to violence against women. Ms. Hanson is responsible for developing the Department’s legal and policy positions regarding the implementation of VAWA and overseeing the annual budget of $400 million dollars. Prior to her appointment as acting director, she served as OVW’s principal deputy director since May 2011. Ms. Hanson previously served as chief program officer at Safe Horizon, a crime victim service organization in New York City that serves 350,000 victims annually.
