WEC Hometown Takedown Contest
World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) and Amp Energy Drink are teaming up to determine where they will take their next big fight. They have launched a nationwide contest inviting fans to log on and vote for the city nearest them to host the event. The event is slated for December 2010.
The St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa is known for its diverse events and has partnered with WEC in an effort to bring another nationally recognized event to the Tampa area. The arena was recently recognized as the fourth busiest venue in the country on the Top 100 Worldwide Arena Venues list by Pollstar in its 2010 Mid-Year Special Edition. In addition to its national and international recognition, the St. Pete Times Forum leads the state of Florida as the highest ranked venue in ticket sales.
In order to bring the fight to Tampa, fans are asked to visit ampenergy.com/wec and click "Orlando" (cities within a 200-mile radius of selected voting areas are eligible to host the event). The contest will include only 30 areas around the country, and online voting will determine which region wins. Fans may vote up to ten times per calendar day per person or email address. The promotion ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on July 31, 2010.
World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) is the world's leading Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) sports organization, formed in June 30, 2001. With a history of exciting MMA events and a record of 23 straight sellout crowds, the WEC has proven itself to be the premier fighting event in MMA. With a strong focus on lighter weights such as featherweight, bantamweight and lightweight, the WEC attracts the best talent from all over the globe. The WEC brings together the most disciplined martial arts experts from around the world to compete within the steel cage. All WEC fighters have previous combat sports experience and many are World or Olympic champions.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is an intense and evolving unarmed combat sport in which competitors use interdisciplinary forms of fighting that include jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and others to their strategic and tactical advantage in a supervised match. Scoring for mixed martial arts events in Nevada, New Jersey, California and Florida is based on athletic-commission approved definitions and rules for striking (blows with the hands, feet, knees, or elbows) and grappling (submission, choke holds, throws, or takedowns). No single discipline reigns.
